The John N. Goddard Memorial Chapel

The John N. Goddard Memorial Chapel at Grady – named after John N. Goddard, a well-known Atlanta businessman and philanthropist – serves as a sacred and peaceful space for worship for people of all faiths. For over 50 years, the chapel has functioned as a home away from home for employees, patients, families and community members who have used it for everything from weddings and religious holiday celebrations to a place for daily prayer and comfort in times of need. In 2009, 3,081 religious services were held in the chapel, and the chaplains made 20,993 patient calls, 7103 family calls and 3,248 staff calls.

The chapel has also become an architecturally historical landmark for the Atlanta community. It was originally designed in 1958 by Phillip Trammel Shutze – one of Atlanta’s most renowned architects. The chapel was made possible through a gift from John N. Goddard’s wife Mary. In 2008, the Goddard family again stepped forward along with the Grady Health Foundation and the John H. and Wilhelmina D. Harland Foundation to fund the chapel’s award wining restoration. The chapel received both a 2010 Award in the Excellence in Restoration presented by Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and a 2010 Philip Trammel Shutze Award sponsored by the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America.
